Here’s to…

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” – Apple Inc.

Thank you Mr. Jobs

There is an outpouring of articles, emails, blog posts, tweets and the likes thereof, all in some way or another paying respects to the late Steve Jobs. What he has given us is nothing short of genius. I, however, want to thank him for more than the MacBook Pro I work on, the iPod I listen to or the iPhone I talk on. I want to thank him for teaching us to follow our hearts and to not letting anything get in the way of what we love doing. My last post was somewhat touching on this exact feeling and sometimes I need a shot in the arm to stay on track.

R.I.P. Steve Jobs and thank you.

What ever happened…

… to the time when we were told we could do or be anything we wanted to? It seems that as you grow older, those words of encouragement become more of an empty catchphrase than a belief. We’re told to be, think and act differently and then when we do, we’re seemingly swimming against the current of society.

There’s something about youth that I really envy; their naiveness, innocence and, for lack of a better term, ignorance. Thought I’m a big kid and do dream a lot, I’m still guilty of following the expected path sometimes and I wish myself and more people did what they loved to do and not what they were told to do. Life’s indeed too short.

Just sayin’.

I’m back.

After a long hiatus due to traveling and working, I’m back and will dedicate myself to blogging. Got some cool projects in the works and I’m going to start dropping my daily rants here too. Not really rants, but just my thoughts on things that I ponder often. All positive and good.

See you soon.

A young Matty O?

Thom Yorke does his best impression of me in his latest video for Lotus Flower.

If you’re like me, you’ll need this.

Working with so many passwords for banking, client emails, FTP sites, memberships, etc, I have an overload of usernames and passwords in my life. I actually manage to somehow remember most, but the odd time I forget.

I recently signed up for LastPass and it’s awesome. Essentially a secure password vault for all your goodies. The only thing you have to ever remember is the password to LastPass.

This is priceless.

My good buddy Teddy sent me a link to this vid and it’s priceless. If you like this, peep some of his other vids. Dom Mazzetti vs. Hipsters is pretty money as well.

Latest Works: Beaver Wax & Sean Avery

Long overdue is the launch of my own portfolio site for my design alias, The Infamous Design, which will eventually be unveiled in 2011. I can’t put a time frame on it, as it seems as soon as I get working on it another job comes up and that’s something I shouldn’t complain about. Until my portfolio site does launch, I’ll put updates on projects here.

This past summer I did a re-brand for Beaver Wax, a Canadian owned and operated snow, skate and surf wax company which hand-pours environmentally friendly wax and does so in small batches. They make things the way all things used to be made: with care and by hand. For that reason and to separate the brand from it’s competition, which mostly bare a more modern design, we opted for a vintage look that’s reminiscent of an old soap label. I also recently completed the website for the company (which is still slightly in the works) and it can be seen at beaverwax.com

The next project in the works is a website for professional hockey player Sean Avery (seanavery.com).

That’s it for now. I’ll be sure to update once they’ve launched.

Uncle Grape Tooth

After a stressful couple of weeks Junior and I boarded the overnight bus and hit Mendoza, Argentina for a little R&R. Mendoza is basically wine country down here in Argentina and is situated just east of the border of Chile.

Day 1: Massages at the Villagio Hotel Boutique (a place I highly recommend) followed by watching the SuperBowl at Believe Irish Pub.
Day 2: Wine tasting at Achaval Ferrer, an expensive boutique winery that does labeling and sealing by hand, 5-course lunch paired with 7 glasses of wine at Ruca Malen and then off to meet the truly unique and energetic Carmelo Patti for a few more glasses. Napsicle back at the hotel, then off to Azafran for dinner.
Day 3: About as relaxing as it gets; a day at the hot springs, natural saunas and mud baths at Hotel & Spa Termas Cacheuta.

All in all a pretty sweet few days. I’d suggest any of these places if you’re ever in Mendoza. Just make sure when you take the bus up to the hot springs, you don’t get out at the first stop. That and do the trip with your lady.

More photos after the jump.

Drink.

Dancing and Hookers and Broken iPhones, Oh my!

So many of my peoples got a little email update on the events that took place last evening, leaving me with a broken iPhone this morning. I thought I’d re-post the little event here. Here’s the quick and dirty:

Went out last night with some peoples and got my dance on in a grimy hip-hop bar. Left the bar before the rest of the crew and headed home. A few blocks from my house I encountered a hooker/thief. On top of peeling her clothes off and next to molesting me, she was also trying to pick pocket me. Having some friends who have been ripped off in this exact manner, my 6th sense kicked in. I got defensive at which point I was yelling at her and flailing my arms trying to brush her off. A hard feat with big naked guns in your face. During this, my iPhone was dislodged from my bear-like grip and the screen got smashed.

Now, I awoke this morning and was ticked and gave the phone one extra good luck toss just to make sure it was really broken, only to find out afterward that a cracked screen can sometimes be fixed. 0 for 1.

Note the gap between the front and back casing.
